City Guide Istanbul, Turkey

Submitted by: Myvacations Uk

Istanbul is the largest city of Turkey, home to a population of 13,483,052 in 2011.A megacity, it is the nation’s cultural, economic, and financial center.

Istanbul is an old city; you can see the remains of many ancient civilizations and their culture in harmony with Turkish culture. The old versus the new, the traditional versus the modern is a conflict a visitor often observes. The city is full of contrasts, and colorful views, so enjoy one of them: The diverse ethnicity of the city is another point which is worth examining. The Minorities sum up to a majority and build up an enormous population.

The city s over-abundance of important historic buildings and exciting new art galleries and museums provides visitors with more than enough to see during the day, but it s at night that the place swings into high-velocity, mega-stylish action. Locals are flocking to see and be seen at an ever-growing array of bars, clubs and restaurants, bringing with them an infectious sense of joie de vivre and a discerning ability to judge these places on their standard of service, drinks, music and food as well as their position in the what s-hot-and-what s-not stakes.

Istanbul has a temperate oceanic climate which is influenced by a continental climate, with hot and humid summers and cold, wet and occasionally snowy winters. Istanbul has a high annual average rainfall of 844 mm (which is more than that of London, Dublin or Brussels, whose negative reputation Istanbul does not suffer), with late autumn and winter being the wettest, and late spring and summer being the driest.

Istanbul is known for its trade the world over and is the largest city in Turkey, by size. Apart from being a leading trade centre, this city has rich historical significance with a vibrant imperial background. It is also known for being the first Christian capital. Istanbul’s heritage can be viewed through its impressive monuments, such as the Blue Mosque, which is beautiful and enchanting.

The Grand Bazaar can be a bit overwhelming not only because of its size but also the adamancy of the shopkeepers. There are only a few publications in the city that are in English (including Timeout Magazine and the Hurriyet Daily News). But in terms of content the Guide is pretty helpful. They did a great article about the best stores in the Grand Bazaar and it’s a nice break down of the worthy stores.

Galata Tower was built in 1348 by Genoese colony. It was used mostly for defensive purposes. At the time it was built, it was the highest tower in city. When Istanbul was already Turkish, from 1717 tower was used for spotting fires.

Istanbul is an attractive destination for travelling around. Every year millions of tourists call on Istanbul. If you have sufficient time, my advice to you is to spend your vacation in Istanbul. Nowhere in the world can you experience the life as you can in Istanbul.

Istanbul is also the capital of art and culture as well as being a combination of eastern and western cultures. Istanbul was Europe Cultural Capital in 2010. Many art based actions are attainable even during holiday. Few of them are; opera and ballet, art exhibitions, auctions, theatres, concerts, festivals, conferences and unique museums.
